In 2377, the crew of the USS Artemis was seconded by Starfleet Admiral Haran, who had located an ancient Iconian tablet she suspected of holding an artificially intelligent memory Engram of Iconian creation. The Artemis took her in pursuit of the tablet.

The Engram was one of many left behind by the long-dead Iconian race, to safeguard some of their Portals and associated facilities.

This discovery touched off a mission through space, as well as across Iconian portals.

Iconian Engrams were complex, quasi-sentient program, partly comprised of Iconian DNA and incomplete race memory. They had the ability to possess or share consciousness with sentient hosts, and control technologically advanced Iconian technology.

The search for these Engrams was spearheaded by Starfleet Admiral Haran. Central to her long-standing (and classified) search for these Engrams was a crewman lost during testing of one previously recovered by Starfleet: the Admiral's daughter, possessed by the Engram before disappearing via Iconian Portal.

Thanks to the intervention of a holographic security officer aboard USS Artemis, the crew won the trust of the first Engram the crew encountered. Eventually, with other crew volunteering to host and befriend Engrams, gathered over the mission, Artemis brokered a treaty with them.

A Romulan mission into Federation space to recover this advanced technology threatened that resolution before it was thwarted, in part by the Engrams and valiant Starfleet Officers.

The Engrams, Admiral Haran and her daughter, still possessed by the consciousness of an actual Iconian mind, and several volunteer crew members took possession of the Romulan's warp -and cloak- capable vessel and declared it an Embassy of the Iconian Remnance.

The Remnance subsequently painted their new home purple.

Before departing for parts unknown, with the stated mission of finding other Remnants and learning more about their past, the Captain granted the Iconian Remnance standing as a government in the eyes of the Federation.
